Fast and Furious

It’s hard not to feel a little bad for the 2015 Jaguar XK, what with all the attention – deserved, we might add – the F-TYPE has received recently. But consumers searching for a confident, sumptuous, and exhilarating mode of transportation should know that the XK fully embraces these ideals, and offers up so much more.

New for 2015

The 2015 Jaguar XK now includes adaptive headlights and HD radio as standard features. Meanwhile, trim levels have shrunk, with the Touring and limited-edition XKR-S GT no longer available. For the 2015 model year, Jaguar has also removed the optional adaptive cruise control and forward collision alert system.

It’s one of the most beautifully styled Jaguars around, and can be had in standard coupe or convertible form. So if you’re looking to blend in—look elsewhere, as the 2015 XK will have onlooker’s attention faster than you can make the dash from 0-60 mph. Make no mistake, the XK is the quintessential grand-tourer, and is more than worthy of your attention.

Powertrains and Performance

At the heart of the entry-level XK lives a powerful 5.0-liter V8 that generates 385 horsepower and 380 pound-feet of torque. As with other XK models, power is sent to the rear-wheels via six-speed automatic transmission.

Additional muscle is offered by the XKR, which sports a supercharged version of the same engine. Here, output is raised to 510 horsepower and 461 pound-feet of torque.

Finally, the most ferocious XK, the XKR-S, features a souped-up version of the XKR’s menacing mill. Here, we see output raised further to 550 horsepower and 502 pound-feet of torque.

If it seems like the XKR and XKR-S are track-bred, you’re not far off the mark. The XK – in all of its guises – demands respect. Drivers looking to maximize the vehicle’s total potential, as well as enjoy its full range of ability, will need to exercise a degree of patience. This deference will be rewarded, however, as the XK exhibits sheer athleticism and driving joy in virtually every driving scenario placed before it.

Of course, the XK isn't all about raw power and speed. An adjustable suspension helps take the edge off the car’s ferocity enough to deliver a more subtle and relaxed ride when desired.

Features and Trims

The 2015 Jaguar XK is available in three trims levels: XK, XKR, and XKR-S. All models can be had in either standard coupe or convertible versions.

The XK represents the entry point into the entire lineup and offers potential owners all the accoutrement they could ever want from a British grand-tourer. This includes, leather upholstery, 10-way power front seats, keyless entry/ignition, and more. Exterior highlights include 20-inch wheels, bi-xenon headlamps, LED running lamps, and a handy rearview camera. Standard tech features include a seven-inch touchscreen interface, navigation, and an eight-speaker Bowers & Wilkins sound system, complete with CD player, satellite radio, and USB/iPod ports.

As expected, the XKR and XKR-S up their respective games with various upgrades and creature comforts. The XKR sports a limited slip differential for increased handling and different 20-inch wheels, while the XRS-S adds its own (wider) 20-inch matte gray wheels, more aggressively-tuned suspension, unique interior trim, and upgraded exhaust. The XKR-S further distinguishes itself with a carbon-fiber front splitter and rear aero diffuser, a partially carbon-fiber rear wing, and unique aerodynamic body kit.

Exterior/Interior

The Jaguar XK's body is constructed of bonded aluminum and combines traditional British sporty looks with conspicuous elegance. It’s easily one of the most distinguishable models around, exhibiting classic coupe proportions by virtue of its long nose and short trunk. Move up from base models and unique design elements start to crop up, such as the XKR’s exclusive exhaust and wheels, or the XKR-S’ unique aero kit and race-inspired carbon-fiber flourishes.

Step inside and the XK exudes a level of luxury only Jaguar can provide. Upscale elements such as a modern multipurpose touchscreen and rotary gear selector are met by a pleasing mix of contrast-stitched leather overlays and polished hardwoods.

Drivers and passengers alike should have no trouble finding a comfortable position, thanks to the vehicle’s 16-way adjustable front seats. And while second-row space is at a premium, discerning drivers would do well to utilize this space as additional cargo volume; however coupe models do provide an ample 11.7 cubic feet of space.

Of course, for true summertime fun, or when nature permits, convertible models can go wild and shed their power soft tops. The entire process takes 18 seconds and is done with a mere push of a button.

Safety

Standard safety equipment on the 2015 Jaguar includes traction and stability control, antilock brakes, front seat side airbags, active front head restraints, front and rear parking sensors, and a rearview camera.

The 2015 XK also employs Jaguar’s Adaptive Restrain Technology System (ARTS ™), which features intelligent sensors designed to assess the severity of an impact. These sensors then analyze and calculate information such as driver and passenger weight, seat position, and seatbelt status in order to deploy the vehicle’s dual-stage airbags in the most effective manner possible.

Bottom Line

If you’re searching for vehicle that can deliver prodigious power and an equal measure of refinement, then look no further than the 2015 Jaguar XK. While purists may want to climb the totem pole and consider the XKR or even the XKR-S, know that no matter which model you choose, this is one Jaguar that simple oozes appeal and performance.

It’s also worth noting that the 2015 model year will be the last of the XK in its current form (with a new model expected within the next couple of years) but that shouldn’t deter drivers from enjoying what this beast of a GT has to offer. And with a reasonable MSRP starting at $84,000,* now may be the perfect time to tame this four-wheeled feline.
