New for 2015
The GMC Yukon has been totally redesigned for the 2015 model year. Highlights include an integrated fold-flat third-row seat, updated exterior/interior styling, and greater fuel economy despite an increase in engine output.
Strength and Sophistication
The GMC Yukon has always been a rugged and handsome SUV built to shoulder heavy loads and traverse tough terrain—all while providing the type luxury and refinement typically associated with more expensive makes.
For 2015, the Yukon has boosted its resume thanks to a pair of V8 powertrains that are more powerful and fuel efficient than those sold last year. That is, impressively, in addition to a revamped exterior and improved interior that should leave drivers and passengers alike thoroughly satisfied.
Powertrains and Performance
Non-Denali Yukon models come with a 5.3-liter V8 engine that delivers 355 horsepower and 383 pound-feet of torque. Step up to the top-of-the-line Denali and the 5.3-liter V8 is replaced by a 6.2-liter version dishing out 420 horsepower and 460 pound-feet of torque.
All Yukon models regardless of trim level employ a six-speed automatic transmission that sends power to the rear wheels (for 2WD models) or all four wheels (on 4WD models).
Helping the Yukon through rough terrain is a two-speed transfer case with low-range gearing. An automatic locking rear differential is also standard, providing greater ride stability and traction. Additionally, the Yukon the can be outfitted with available Magnetic Ride Control, which adjusts the stiffness of the shock absorbers to optimally perform regardless of road conditions.
The Yukon curtails its thirst for fuel with the aid of a handful of technologies, such as Direct Injection (DI), Active Fuel Management (AFM), and continuously Variable Valve Timing (VVT)—all of which combine to help 5.3-liter models earn an EPA estimated 18 mpg combined (16 city/23 highway 2WD and 16 city/22highway for 4WD).* The Denali’s 6.2-liter V8 throws up similar numbers, earning 17 mpg combined (15 city/21 highway) for 2WD, and 16 mpg combined (14 city/21 highway) with 4WD.*
At some point it’s likely you’ll need or want to haul something—something heavy. Thankfully, the Yukon is more than skilled to do so. When properly equipped the, the Yukon has a maximum tow rating of 8,500 pounds (2WD models), while 4WD versions tow a bit less.
Features and Trims
The 2015 GMC Yukon is a full-size SUV that is available in SLE, SLT, and Denali trims. It can seat up to eight passengers and has a starting MSRP of $47,740.**
The entry-level SLE Yukon is well-equipped, providing virtually everything owners could ever need from a full-size SUV. Standard highlights include 18-inch alloy wheels, front and rear parking sensors, tri-zone automatic climate control, and power front seats (eight-way driver and four-way passenger, including power lumbar).
Tech highlights include Bluetooth® hands-free phone and audio streaming, an eight-inch touchscreen, and handy rearview camera. For infotainment, the Yukon is equipped with GMC IntelliLink, which includes voice control and smartphone app integration.
Also standard is GM’s excellent OnStar telematics suite, as well as a nine-speaker premium Bose sound system—complete with HD radio and satellite radio (subscription required), CD player, and five USB ports. There’s even an SD card slot reader.
SLT models add even more goods as standard, like a power liftgate, power-adjustable pedals, and auto-dimming rearview mirror. SLT models also get additional driver safety aids such as rear cross-traffic alter and blind-spot monitoring, power-folding mirrors, and keyless ignition/entry.
Convenience and comfort items standard with the SLT trim include a power tilt-and-telescoping steering wheel, a heated steering wheel, driver memory settings, heated and ventilated front seats (10-way with four-way lumbar), heated second-row seats (power fold-and-tumble 60/40 bench), power folding third-row seats, and ambient interior lighting.
Finally, the top tier Denali adds to the SLT’s standard equipment with even more amenities, including larger 20-inch alloy wheels, xenon headlights, active noise cancellation, a navigation system, and an upgraded 10-speaker Bose sound system.
Of course, if you’re looking to pick and choose what features you want, the Yukon can also be outfitted with a number of individual packages as well as larger wheel options.
Design
Size alone and a commanding frame are enough to make the 2015 Yukon stand out but it also benefits from smart design touches that come together to make one big and bold SUV. Sharp-edged styling with tower-like panels, sculpted bodywork, and LED-accented headlights strike a wonderful balance of strength and sophistication.
Inside, you’ll find spacious quarters and premium accommodations for GMC’s popular SUV. We’ve already mentioned the wealth of standard and available features, but what truly impresses it the sheer amount of space the Yukon provides. There’s a total three rows of seating which can be configured in various ways accommodate up to eight passengers, and a total of 94.7 cubic feet of space for cargo with the second and third rows folded down.
Safety
Vehicles like the GMC Yukon project safety by virtue of their dimensions alone, but it’s nice to know GMC haven’t stopped there. Standard safety equipment includes antilock disc brakes, traction control, stability control (with trailer-sway control), front-seat side airbags and full-length side curtain airbags. Front and rear parking sensors and a rearview camera are standard on every Tahoe.
Also included as standard is OnStar, a telematics system that provides a suite of onboard safety features such as automatic crash notification, on-demand roadside assistance, remote door unlocking, stolen vehicle assistance, and turn-by-turn navigation.
Available safety features include a head-up display, forward collision alert, lane-departure warning, a vibrating safety-alert seat, rear cross-traffic alert, and blind-spot monitoring.
Bottom Line
The 2015 Chevrolet Tahoe is one of the few remaining truck-based SUVs. As such, its excellent mix of strength, sophistication, and space is tough to find elsewhere. Nevertheless, if you’re looking for a vehicle that can tackle the tough stuff and navigate difficult terrain – all while transporting a small army in supreme comfort and safety – you’d do well to explore all that the Yukon has to offer.
