Porsche unveiled its latest model at the 2016 Geneva International Motor Show. The 911 R is the latest iteration of the iconic Porsche 911, dubbed the “R” model for Racing.
The 2016 911 R, while modernized to feel fresh, pays homage to the original 911 R rally racer from the 1960s. The inaugural 911 R’s design remains consistent with the 2016 911 R, which borrows the same classic look as well as some features from the 911 Carrera and the 911 GT3. For the ultimate throwback to its legendary ancestor, the 2016 911 R offers optional Porsche logos and red or green stripes across the center of car.
A naturally-aspirated 4.0-litre flat-six engine pairs with a six-speed manual transmission to pump out 500 horsepower at 8,250 rpm and produce 338 pound-feet of torque at 6.250 rpm. True to impressive 911 form, the latest R model can jump from 0 to 60 miles per hour in 3.7 seconds and reach a top speed of 200 miles per hour.
Fear no corners in the 911 R. The Porsche Ceramic Composite Brake system, mechanical rear differential lock, rear-axle steering, and Ultra-High Performance Tires all work together to provide an undoubtedly smooth ride. Needless to say, you’ll be prepared for any curve the road throws at you.
As an added bonus, the innovative Porsche Stability Management (PSM) is included in the 911 R, allowing the front axle to rise and increase ground clearance by 1.2 inches.
Weighing in at only 3,021 pounds, the 911 R is the lightest 911 available. Porsche made sure to strip down the 911 R to the bare necessities, removing the air conditioner and audio system, though both can be installed at no extra cost. The front features carbon fiber in its luggage compartment lid and fenders for a feather-light ride while the magnesium roof creates a lower center of gravity.
The interior features carbon fiber backrests on the full bucket seats and a houndstooth design that calls back to the iconic 1960s 911.
The 2016 Porsche 911 R can be ordered now and will arrive in the summer. Interested buyers should note that less than 1,000 units will be made, ensuring this Porsche’s status as a future classic.
